As a young teen, Heather Rothsching, owner of Pepper and Blue Salon & Spa found reading Vogue and Seventeen magazine a fun way to learn about fashion and makeup. She covered the walls of her room with samples. “I’d mimic the makeup and artistry, practice on myself and my sister and any other willing participants,” Rothsching said.

Fast forward to adulthood, after schooling for business and skincare, Rothsching managed salons and spas in the Skippack, Blue Bell and Conshohocken area for 18 years before making the leap into ownership. During that time, as an interior design hobbyist she also gained experience consulting and running other businesses. “All along, I always knew one day I would open my own place.”

When she and her husband Dan saw the old barn property on the corner of West Pumping Station and California roads in Quakertown, they were intrigued. “I realized that Quakertown really needed something unique and special,” she said.

Rothsching envisioned an enchanting hair salon with an upstairs spa for massage and skin care. “This building was in really bad shape, but I had a vision and I knew what I wanted. Dan said, ‘Tell me what you need and we’ll do it,’” Rothsching said.

An electrical contractor superintendent and jack-of-all trades, Dan laid out the new salon including its European style shampoo stations. Pepper & Blue celebrates its third year of business this month.

“This building is literally the home to some of the most talented stylists, skin care technicians and massage therapists in Bucks County,” Rothsching said.

Within its first year, Pepper and Blue had a month-long waiting list for evening and weekend appointments. What began as a staff of five has increased to 16, with the majority of its team members having at least a decade of experience. “Its surreal but I’m so appreciative of how Quakertown has received us. Their response is a humongous part of our success.”

A three-time Best of Nexzest favorite, Pepper and Blue Salon & Spa averages about 25 new customers each week including hundreds of regulars. To accommodate, it has added Mondays to its hours and Rothsching said, “we are working diligently on physical expansion plans.”
