Parkland`s Hidden Treasure

About three decades ago Monica Yurconic, a schoolteacher and daughter of a Lehigh Valley businessman, met Mike Groff, a hands-in-the-mulch-kind-of-guy who'd become a Landscape Designer and Certified Arborist while working as a landscaper.

Eventually, the two purchased the portion of the landscape and maintenance business, which Mike's father owned and they looked for a place to settle their new company, Naturalscapes. When they chose Ross Plants and Flowers for their wedding florist, they didn't dream that they would one day own the green house, flower and gift shop as well. But in 2006, they purchased it to house the landscaping business.

Today, Ross Plants & Flowers seems like part of a larger plan that took tidbits of building, learning and growth. Early on, work at the fledgling small business entailed finding the best ways to make both the landscaping and planting businesses flourish. Gradually, they added ponds and fencing and they freshened its look to make it their own. “Every year we’ve made the business a little bit better,” Monica said.

Monica grew up in a family where business was based on the family name, so keeping the “Ross” name seemed unnatural to her at first. Nonetheless, she worked diligently to learn the floral business—much of it hands-on. Along the way, she discovered how to embrace the inherited name.

"How do I connect with a name that isn`t my own?" Monica wondered aloud.

"I dove into this knowing I can learn it because of my love of learning and love of flowers. Flowers make people happy and lift the mood. I connected with this [florist] world by appreciating the beautiful things, learning this world and sharing what I love about it with people that I know," Monica said.

Ross Plants & Flowers have added ladies` nights to teach flower arrangements or planter creations and provides presentations with local garden clubs and organizations in the community. Together, Mike and Monica have developed an expert team of artists including Lead Floral Designer, Keitha Pavolko and Greenhouse Manager, Samantha Schmoyer.

Monica said, "Our team works really well together. We call it the Ross family. Everybody has a role to make our place a success."

With wedding, prom and planting season in full bloom, they’re stocked with annuals, vegetables, herbs, hanging baskets, fishpond supplies and hand-selected garden décor items. Stop in to see the selection. "I want people to think of us as a hidden treasure in their backyard. A place of calm and happiness….a place where they can get lost and escape," Monica said.
