What Did You Do Today
12-26-2017

If your children or grandchildren spend time in preschool, Kindergarten, or in a before and after school program, you’ve probably asked them, “What did you do today?”

Depending upon his or her age, you may not have gotten an answer that tells you what you want to know. How do you get more detail? Read the email blast? Check out the newsletter? Ask the teacher?

With its focus on family engagement, LifeSpan implemented an app to foster better communication. “We chose ‘HiMama.’ It’s a daily report for parents that includes basics like: diapering, feeding, and naps. But most importantly it educates the parents about what their child learned during the day,” said Director Jenn Hausman.

The app allows parents to see lesson plans and pictures of hands-on activities linked to PA standards educational targets. Executive Director Nicole Fetherman said, “This app links the basic skills that children are learning to our program in a family-friendly way. It’s a better way to see the intentionality of what we do and how we prepare them for Kindergarten.”

Teachers can communicate directly to parents via email through HiMama. This reduces classroom disruption, improves convenience and allows parents to see evidence that their child is learning. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Hausman said.

To better prepare at risk children who come from income eligible families, LifeSpan coordinates with QCSD in the state funded Pre-K Counts program. With lower teacher to student ratios, it serves young children by offering quality education as well as nutritious meals.

Fetherman said, “Pre-K Counts has been a wonderful addition to the Quakertown area and we continue to see an increasing need.”

Lifespan, a Keystone STARS center and private academic licensed facility, offers full day Kindergarten and provides enrichment for those in half day Kindergarten programs. In partnership with the school district, LifeSpan offers both before and after school programs at all six elementary schools to support children and their working parents.
